Climate Injustice: Why Do Those Who Burn the Least, Burn the Most?

In today's world, every decision is measured in terms of profit and loss. So let's do the math on climate change too. Nepal's share of global carbon emissions is only about 0.1 percent. An average Nepali citizen emits roughly half a ton of carbon a year. In contrast, an average American emits several times more, nearly fourteen tons, and in some Gulf countries this figure exceeds twenty tons. Now consider this picture. The people who emitted the least are the ones facing the devastation caused by floods, landslides, heavy rainfall, and melting glaciers. The people who died in Nepal's floods had, in effect, burned almost nothing. Meanwhile, those who burned the most are living relatively safe and peaceful lives, thousands of miles from that destruction. This is what we call Climate Injustice. And this injustice is not limited to humans alone. What is the carbon footprint of animals? Nearly zero. What about trees? Less than zero; they actually absorb carbon from the atmos...
